My cordless phone is currently powered by a Uniden BT-1004 Cordless Phone Battery. Can Nickel Cadmium be used instead of Nickel Metal Hydride batteries or vice-versa?
You definitely can interchange Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, provided you choose the right model that is compatible with your phone. But, interchanging is never possible with cordless phone batteries that are exclusively designed for a particular model.
When I asked my friends for an option to dispose Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable batteries, most of them suggested recycling. Why is recycling being suggested? Is it because NiMH batteries might explode?
The chances are very minimal, in fact nil! NiMH batteries come with pressure relief seals, which will open when the pressure inside builds up. However, to be on the safer side, go with the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure that you use a charger that is specifically designed for NiMH batteries. When it comes to disposal, recycle NiMH batteries just like you would do with NiCd batteries.
I recently bought a Uniden BT-1004 Battery Replacement and I was asked to charge it fully before using it the first time. Despite charging it fully, the battery didn’t last long and required another charge. Is something wrong with my battery?
Your battery isn’t really defective. Probably, the reason why NiMH batteries don’t get fully charged the very first time could be because they have remained unused for more than six months. The battery might require 3 charge/usage cycles to “break in” and give you the guaranteed performance. As you continue the charging cycles until the 100th time, the battery will gain more capacity after which they will start losing the capacity gradually.
I want to know briefly about the ideal rates of charging and discharging of Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable batteries?
The charging and discharging rate of NiMH batteries are usually measured in C-rate. It refers to your battery’s current handling capability. When a NiMH battery with a rated capacity of 1000mAh is charged at 100mA current, then the charging rate of the battery would be 0.1C. The rate at which current is drawn by your phone from the battery is the discharge rate. So, the ideal charging rate of NiMH batteries is at 0.1C, whereas the discharging rate is at 0.2C. If these ideal rates are followed, then your battery’s life and performance will surely improve.
